Birkenstock was founded in 1774 by Johann Adam Birkenstock, a cobbler in Germany. The company's history of making footwear and footbeds began with his great-great-grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, who started selling flexible footbed inserts in 1896. The brand became more widely known through the development of a contoured footbed and the release of the first athletic sandal, the "Madrid," in 1963.
